Azerbaijan has a long and rich history dating back to the Bronze Age. The region was ruled by a number of different empires over the centuries, including the Persians, the Arabs, the Turks, and the Russians. Azerbaijan declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

The currency of Azerbaijan is the Azerbaijani manat (₼). The manat is subdivided into 100 gapiks. The current manat was introduced in 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble.
Azerbaijani manat banknotes are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 manat.
Azerbaijani manat coins are available in denominations of 1, 3, and 5 manat.
The old currency of Azerbaijan was the ruble, which was introduced in 1923. The ruble was replaced by the manat in 1993.
