Location

Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by South Africa to the south, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast.

History

Botswana was inhabited by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years before the arrival of the Bantu people in the 17th century. The Bantu people established a number of chiefdoms, which were eventually united under the rule of the Tswana people in the 19th century.

In 1885, Botswana became a British protectorate. It gained independence in 1966.

Present Status

Botswana is a stable and prosperous country. It has one of the highest per capita incomes in Africa. The country's economy is based on mining, tourism, and agriculture.

Currency

The currency of Botswana is the pula (BWP). The pula is divided into 100 thebe. The symbol for the pula is P.

The pula was introduced in 1976, replacing the South African rand. The name pula means "rain" in Setswana, which is the national language of Botswana.

Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, has a landscape defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, which becomes a lush animal habitat during the seasonalfloods. The massive Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with its fossilized river valleys and undulating grasslands, is home to numerous animals including giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs.

A new series of coins was introduced in 2013. Pula introduced, 100 Thebe = 1 Pula All previous coins were demonetized with effect from 28 August 2014, and remained exchangeable to current coins for 5 years until 28 August 2019.

Pula literally means "rain" in Tswana language, because rain is very scarce in Botswana (most of the surface of Kalahari Desert is situated here) and therefore valuable and a blessing. The word also is the national motto of the country.
