Location
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest.
History
Belarus was part of the Russian Empire from the 18th century until the Russian Revolution of 1917. After the revolution, Belarus became part of the Soviet Union. In 1991, Belarus declared its independence from the Soviet Union.
Present Status
Belarus is a unitary semi-presidential republic. The current president is Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994. Belarus is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

The official currency of Belarus is the Belarusian ruble (BYR). It is subdivided into 100 kopecks. The Belarusian ruble was introduced in 1992.
